Persons insured under the SHI system are entitled to contraceptives up to the age of 22, provided they are prescribed by a doctor.
When is artificial insemination reimbursed by the health insurance fund?
Women may not be younger than 25 years of age or older than 40 years of age when undergoing artificial insemination. Men must not be older than 50. If these requirements are met, the statutory health insurance will cover 50 per cent of the costs for the first three attempts at artificial insemination.
This also applies to any medication. General prerequisite: The couples must be married. Unmarried or same-sex couples can, under certain conditions, receive funding from the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs or the respective federal state.
The health insurance funds cover the costs in connection with measures for the cryopreservation of germ cells or germ cell tissue if this appears to be medically necessary due to an illness and its treatment with a therapy that damages germ cells (for example, cancer treatment).
Does the health insurance fund cover the costs of an abortion?
Insured persons of the SHI are entitled to benefits in case of an abortion of the pregnancy for medical and criminological reasons. In the case of an abortion for social reasons according to the so-called counselling regulation, the costs are initially covered by the health insurance fund if the woman is financially needy. These costs are reimbursed to the health insurance fund by the Länder.
